3 Business Lessons to Learn from The Godfather [VIDEO]

The Godfather is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the greatest films of all time. Plenty of life lessons; both good and bad can be learnt from this incredible film. So, here are my top 3 business lessons to learn from The Godfather:

1. Be Decisive

The first of many business lessons to learn from The Godfather is to be decisive. In business, we often take too long to make a decision; we want second opinions from our colleagues or our friends and before we know it, the decision is taken out of our hands.

Don Corleone however, makes quick decisions and stands by those decisions. When he says, “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse”, he means it. He’s made his choice and he sticks to his guns. He commands respect through his strong decision making and you should be doing the same in business.

If you make a prospect an offer, it’s absolutely vital that you don’t display uncertainty in what you are proposing, but you are confident and assertive, like Don Corleone. Otherwise, your prospects will recognise your uncertainty and they’ll see this as a way in to negotiate your offer.

2. “It’s Not Personal, It’s Just Business”

When Michael says to Sonny “It’s not personal, it’s just business” what he means is, you have to take the emotion out of the equation and this is another one of the vital business lessons to learn from The Godfather.

Often in business, we take things too personally and let certain things affect us more than we should. For example, if a prospect is unnecessarily rude to you or says they don’t want to work with you. On these occasions, it’s critical to remember that their decision isn’t necessarily personal, it’s just business. I’ve been guilty of this in the past and I’ve fired off an email in the heat of the moment because I was frustrated and I allowed my emotions to get the better of me. Believe me, no good comes from doing this. It’s important to rein your emotions in, collect your thoughts and think rationally.

We often forget that it’s just business when we are making a difficult decision too and we let our emotions get in the way. For example, letting an employee go or charging a large sum of money to a small business but it’s critical to try and push the emotion aside and remember it’s just business.

We’re not saying that you should ignore emotions all together, because that’s no way to build relationships with prospects, however try not to let them get in the way of important decisions that could really impact your business.

3. “Keep Your Friends Close & Your Enemies Closer”

In business, it’s important to keep a close eye on what your competitors are doing in order to keep up. Identifying what your competitors are doing in terms of their new ranges and their marketing for example, allows you to learn from them but also to realise what you can do differently. This enables you to stay one step ahead and make improvements to your own business.
